Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment

image

If you dare read this story, you become part of the Experiment. I know that sounds a little mysterious-but it’s all I can say right now.

Maximum Ride, better known as Max, is a fourteen-year-old girl who’s in charge of saving the world.

Wait. What? A fourteen-year-old, trying to save the world? You gotta be kidding me. But no, this isn’t a silly, stupid prank.

You see, Max isn’t just your typical teenager. She’s lived in a world without school or grown-ups to boss her around. She takes care of her friends, known as the flock-Fang, Iggy, Nudge, the Gasman, and Angel after their father figure, Jeb Batchelder disappeared without a trace. So it’s up to Max to protect her friends, wipe out half-human, half-wolf creatures called Erasers, find the best chocolate chip cookie in New York city, help the flock find their parents to discover their origins and to top it all off save the world from the destruction being caused by grown-ups.

Think that’s too much for a normal fourteen-year-old? Well, think again. Max has been there and done that. Max knows how to soar to survive. And I mean that literally. THIS GIRL CAN FLY.

Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment is the first installment in James Patterson’s new series, “Maximum Ride” (The Fugitives). Maximum Ride focuses on six genetical prodigies who are known to be 98% human and 2% avian. They escape from the School, the laboratory responsible for grafting avian DNA on them and giving them an assortment of extraordinary capabilities and  a lot of power-packed punches and roundhouses kicks. But now the School wants them back and the whitecoats and Erasers are set to capture Max and her family. They manage to get Angel, the youngest member of the flock which leaves Max and the rest of the gang out on a mission to rescue her from their worst nightmare.

Do not put this book down. I’m dead serious. Your life could depend on it. I’m risking everything by telling you-but you need to know.

Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment is a book that’s indeed hard to put down whether the speaker threatens you or not. The plot is simple yet interesting and some of the dialogues are witty and humorous. The idea is very original and the combination of action, friendship, adventure, science fiction, and love truly makes the book a worthwhile read.

I definitely loved Max and her strength and persona as a leader. She is selfless, determined and imperfect, which makes her one of my favorite butt-kicking heroines. I was also drawn to the character of Fang, dark and soundless, always shifting through the shadows. And I also loved the way James Patterson revealed each character’s fatal flaw, making the readers realize that even though the flock are a group of superhuman beings, they, too face challenges and acquire imperfections that normal teens would experience.

On the down side, although the plot is interesting and hard to miss,  I think it lacks something more, some satisfaction that I was looking for. Sometimes it was too predictable and it kept repeating itself. The flock getting chased by Erasers, the flock escaping and beating their lupine enemies up, the flock proceeding to another city and discovering new abilities, the Erasers coming after them again. It went on and on like a repeating cycle. I was also looking for more action and details for the fight scenes. All I read was a few kicks and punches, some blood there, a crack somewhere and they’re done. The writing style lacks description in some parts which gives the audience a blank map to fill out.

All in all, despite its scifi genre, the book was a light and easy read. I’d give Patterson’s work a  6 out of 10. I recommend this book to people who have a sense of adventure, like me. I also suggest this as a good summer read and for those who are interested in badass female characters and genetic experiments.

I am now on my way to the next book in the series, “School’s Out-Forever” and I can’t wait to find out what happens to Max and the flock. Will be posting a review of it as soon as I’m done. The Maximum Ride series will truly keep you turning page after page.

Drops of Jupiter

HAVE YOU EVER FALLEN IN LOVE WITH A PERSON WITHOUT EVEN REALIZING IT?

Sometimes, that’s the way love works. You think the both of you are just close friends. You act sweet. You protect and stand up for each other. You have fights and fits. People think you two are a couple… but you just haven’t realized or accepted it yet. But sometimes, some friendships just can’t turn into LOVE. Sometimes, these relationships are better off to remain that way. Sometimes, people don’t want to risk losing the permanent friendship for something that could be temporary… something that could easily be gone with one fatal mistake, something that could end it all.

Sometimes, love works by giving second chances. The one person that got away coming back. The person you used to ignore you finally noticing your feelings. Someone you hurt before giving you another opportunity to set things right. But when love gives you a second chance, do you grab it and take it in? Or do you let it slip away and become your biggest “WHAT IF?”

“Drops of Jupiter” is my first short story involving non-teen fiction. This story is for those who think that the feeling isn’t enough. It’s for those who are torn apart between friendship and love. This is for those who feel a spark but decide to put it away and chose something else over it. This story is for those who are given second chances and those who are wishing for it. This story is for people who DON’T KNOW WHAT TO FEEL ANYMORE.

Take My Hand

image

Just a simple touch of a hand can mean a lot of things.

It can mean reassurance that everything will be okay, that there’s nothing to be afraid of, that everything’s take care of. It can mean ‘hold on’ or ‘whatever happens, don’t let go.’ It can mean that someone will always be here for you. It can mean support. It can mean affection. It can mean pity for your situation. It can mean sympathy. It can say ‘sorry’. It can mean LOVE.

There

image

Sometimes, we feel as if we can no longer go on. We feel like giving up. We feel as if there’s no one THERE for us. But the truth is, you’re not alone. Someone will always be there. It can be somebody you don’t notice or someone you seem to neglect but that person will always be there no matter what.

In every storm that we face, no matter how drenched we are in the heavy rain or no matter how scared we are of the roaring thunder, somebody will always be out there, holding an umbrella, ready to take our hand and pick us up from our fall and get us out of the pouring rain.

Stay

image

One word that I can never manage to say.

I can’t make people STAY. Sometimes, I get tired of it. I get tired of the same old cycle. I get tired of being too attached and being left behind in the end.

So, I leave you this message in this poem.

TREASURE ALL THE TIME YOU GOT WITH THE PERSON YOU LOVE WHILE HE OR SHE IS STILL THERE. Say what you need to say. Make a move even if it’s not in your nature. Do what you need to do. Embrace each moment. Replay each reverie. Capture each memory. Cause in the end, when that person leaves, it’s all you have left.

Don't judge a book by its cover... Except when it's made by my sister <3

image

Meet Nads.:)

For every novel or short story, there’s always a cover. And behind every cover is an artistic and clever mind that designs and weaves one image that paints a thousand words and sums up the whole story.

In my budding writing career, it was Nadine Agoncillo, my long time friend and sister who made all those covers for me. She was one of my first supporters and she constantly reads everything that I post on my official writing site. I am actually overwhelmed by the support she is giving me, that’s why I dedicate this post to her. Think of it as a tribute to someone who’s always been there.

Nads started being my sister during our Sophomore year. We were seatmates during one quarter and we found out through that instance, that we shared a lot of things-our weakness for books, our hobby to doodle and draw, even our favorite subject which was History. I remember our desks looking alike-Starbucks planner, the current book we were reading and our very trusty Hexapluses stacked up in this particular order. I found out that Nads wasn’t just someone I shared hobbies or interests with. I figured out that she was also a friend that can be there for you in times of need. She’s a very good listener, which is one quality I like about her. She’s also very funny too, considering her BACTERIA moments with my other best friend, Chady. :))))

“MY DREAMS ARE WORTH CHASING AFTER.” Indeed, this girl has big dreams and a fiery determination. She has it all-the artistic mind, the extraordinary headturner beauty, the simplicity a girl must possess, the talent and knack for art and most of all, A TRULY MAGNANIMOUS HEART. <3 This is what made me love her. And I just wanted to say, I’m lucky to have her in my team and I’m most lucky to have her as a sister… not by blood but BY HEART. :)

KEEP DREAMING, SIS! I’m always here for you! :)

Parable of the Puppet

I made this poem for my CLE homework about two years ago. I decided to publish it just now because well, I admit, I was pretty shy to go public and all.

image

This poem or parable is about a puppeteer’s undying love for a special puppet. In a way, it resembles God’s love for us. He is our puppeteer and we are His sons. Even if we turn away and rebel against him or cause him pain, God will never give up on us. He will always be our father and He will never cease to love us.

This is a very beautiful and meaningful poem so I hope you enjoy reading it. :)

I Won't Give Up

image

HOW CAN YOU LET GO OF SOMEONE YOU STILL LOVE?

What if things weren’t meant to last? What if things aren’t working out anymore? Would you try again? Would you back down? Will you fight for who you love? Or will you give up just to make that person happy?

Some relationships weren’t meant to last forever. Sometimes, no matter how much you love a person, that person can’t always return the same feeling towards you. No matter how hard you try, sometimes you just can’t make that person happy anymore. Sometimes… LOVE JUST ISN’T ENOUGH.

Some things were meant to end. But some things are just worth fighting for.

This is the new installment in my lists of short stories. “I Won’t Give Up” is based on the song by Jason Mraz. This is a different plot from all the short stories I’ve written and it’s the first time I’ve based a short story on an actual song. So, I hope you guys like it! :)

Synopsis:

I WASN’T CREATED TO CARE. I WASN’T MADE TO PITY.  MY PURPOSE WAS TO BE THE PERFECT SOLDIER, A FLAWLESS PIECE OF KILLING MACHINE. YES, THIS IS WHAT I AM. THIS IS WHY THEY MADE ME.

I WAS CREATED TO KILL, NOT TO FEEL.

Aurum, a vast landmass formed after the Apocalypse. Ruled by a totalitarian government called The Control, citizens are expected to consider their every word they say as LAW otherwise it would mean death. The population is unjustly zoned into 38 Divisions according to wealth, power and social stature with Division 1 being the richest and Division 38 being the most marginalized.

Aside from strict rules imposed by government officials, boys and girls who reach the age of eighteen are expected to follow the path destined to them by The Control. They would chose their college, their job, what division they’ll be inhabiting and who will they marry. Enter Jonathan Kress, the most eligible bachelor in Aurum and the son of the wealthy Control officer, Jonas Kress. On the eve of his eighteenth birthday, he runs away to escape his fate but gets tangled up in the uprising caused by The Alliance, a rebel group that stirred the Division War several years ago. He is rescued by Lauren Steel, a trained assassin with a secret of her own. Coming from different sides of the road, Jonathan and Lauren have a hard time adjusting and reading one another. Soon enough, they discover something that seems to draw both of them together and they could no longer stop it despite how forbidden it looks. Lauren knows that if she doesn’t hold back her feelings for Jonathan, she’d become weak. Jonathan knows that if he keeps loving Lauren, he is going against Aurum’s most powerful authorities, including his own father.

WHAT IF YOU KNOW LOVE WOULD KILL YOU? WOULD YOU TAKE THE RISK? WILL YOU FIGHT BACK?

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

image

I have a curse.

I HAVE A GIFT.

I’m a monster.

I’M MORE THAN HUMAN.

My touch is lethal.

MY TOUCH IS POWER.

I am their weapon.

I WILL FIGHT BACK.

Juliette Ferrars is not an ordinary human being. The last time Juliette touched someone, she committed murder. Now Juliette is locked up in a cell, branded as insane, and hasn’t touched anyone in 264 days.

While in prison, The Reestablishment sends in Adam Kent as her new cellmate. Juliette is afraid of hurting Adam, knowing that she has a fatal touch. Aside from that, Juliette recognizes Adam as somebody from her past, someone she used to know, someone that used to care for her.

With the world wrecked in chaos and havoc, The Reestablishment cannot provide the answers for the problems of the people. So many have died and the survivors are thirsty for war. The Reestablishment sees Juliette as a solution to their problem and sets her free. They offer her a life she has never imagined having. Now Juliette has to make a choice. Will she be their weapon or will she be a warrior?

In Tahereh Mafi’s debut novel,  a dystopian society is given a paranormal twist and a lush, irresistible romance. The novel also portrays the conflicts of today’s society such as corruption, the thirst for power, acceptance of differences, close familial ties, and believing in your own abilities regardless of what they say about you.

The novel has both positive and negative points. It isn’t the best dystopian novel I have ever encountered but there were some extraordinary things that kept me flipping through the book’s pages and wanting to finish it as fast as I could.

First, I loved how Tahereh crossed out words from Juliette’s narrative. In my opinion, it was exquisite and pointed out Juliette’s unstable mental state, being isolated and deprived from touching anybody at all. Tahereh’s idea of Juliette writing down her own story probably with the use of her trusty notebook and pen that she had kept since she was in the cell was a way for her to reach out to her readers. As the story progresses, the crosses start to minimize indicating Juliette slowly getting back to her sanity.

Second, while other readers are devouring the romance between Adam and Juliette, which at times I thought was kind of sappy and too ordinary, I was drawn to the character of Warner. In the story, Warner is a power-hungry nineteen-year-old boy who’s the leader of Sector 45 and the son of a leader of The Reestablishment. He has been studying Juliette’s lethal touch ever since he heard of it. He was the one responsible for Juliette’s release from the asylum because he wanted her to use her remarkable abilities to fight on his side. He mistreats Juliette, scaring her and torturing her while at the same time, he gives Juliette things of worldly grandeur and shows different gestures towards her. In his eyes, Juliette is more than powerful and he would do anything to keep her under his control. Why? Because he loves Juliette. Yes, you may think that Warner is a psycho and his feelings for Juliette aren’t love but obsession, but I think Warner is just a lonely teenage boy thirsting for love and affection as much as Juliette does. A part of the novel states that Warner must’ve been a product of bad parenting which easily gives him off as someone who has a strong facade but an unhealed heart. As the chapters went on, I found myself intrigued by Warner’s true personality. His name, which is not stated in the story, makes him more dark and enigmatic. Villains in novels are people we usually hate but to me, Warner was different. Aside from having a weakness for blonde and arrogant fictional boys, Warner gave me a different feeling towards his antagonistic persona. He made me angry at him. He made me pity him. He made me admire him for his control. He made me disgust his fixation for Juliette. Most of all, he kept me wondering how can such an evil, tormented soul be trapped in the body of an hearstoppingly gorgeous boy? Warner may appear as a possessive psychotic monster but madman as he is, I see him as a boy who’s just struggling to prove himself, an ambitious boy who gets over-the-top with a girl, a boy who just wants to be acknowledged for his power, a boy who somehow beneath the steel facade is just waiting to be loved in return.

Third, the story is fast-paced. There was no need for further explaining or unnecessary detours. A couple of words, bam! Straight to the point.

Lastly, I loved how Tahereh put a paranormal twist in the story. I definitely adored the X-Men vibes it has given me while I was reading it. Omega Point was just so fascinating and cool that I wished it was real. I loved how she came up with the idea since a paranormal/dystopian novel has never been done before. It was very original and well-plotted.

However, the book also had negative qualities that I’d like to point out.

First is the ostentatious use of metaphors and other figures of speech. God, sometimes I felt as if I was reading a poem and not a story. The novel relied on a creativity overload which made the narration of the story excruciating and difficult to relate to at the same time. There were also unnecessary paragraphs which made the book longer and more tiring to read. Sometimes, you’d stop in the middle of reading and ask yourself, “Hey, is this even connected with what’s happening in the chapter?” or “Wait, what? Is that even needed. Wait, lemme read again.” Don’t get me wrong, Tahereh is a very creative writer; however, the writing style she used for “Shatter Me”, in my opinion, could be more useful in poems and proses.

Second, Juliette’s awakening was pretty sluggish in the book. I understand the gradual character development situation which happens most of the time in the first book but her awakening took too much time. She always depended on Adam as her bird who’s gonna help her fly. If she hadn’t used her capabilities to fight back in the end, I literally would’ve stopped reading and sell the book to someone generous enough to buy it.

Third, I expected something more from the whole story. I expected more action, more showcase of Juliette’s capabilities. If I am not mistaken, she used her lethal touch only thrice  in the books. I was expecting the novel to pack more power punch but it didn’t live up much to my expectations regarding action and movement.

But still, no matter how critics say that the ending falls flat, I found it pretty enticing. It made me want to buy and wait for its sequel, “Unravel Me” which will be out on February 5, 2013. I loved Juliette’s last line and it made me want to read more of her story to find out what happens next.

I recommend this book for those of you who are X-men fans and lovers of young adult dystopian literature. I also recommend this to people who don’t have the patience to stick through long chapters and turtle-paced stories. I’d give the book a rating of 7 out of 10 because of the novel’s creative setting and its originality. If you are looking for a unique read that you will enjoy, “Shatter Me” is definitely one to count on your list.
